Alejandro Garmendia holds off David Smith for 3rd MLGT Victory

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Alejandro Garmendia of Weston eagled the first hole and held on Thursday to win on the Fuzion-Minor League Golf Tour at Ocean Breeze Golf Club. Garmendia outdueled David Smith of West Palm Beach 67 to 68 on the South and North nines, adding five birdies and two bogeys. Smith had six birdies and two bogeys.

It was Garmendia’s third MLGT title, all in the last five months. He won June 6 at Indian Spring CC, Boynton Beach, and Sept. 29 at Jacaranda GC, Plantation. Smith also has three wins. Garmendia earned $625 from the $2,806 purse. Smith, second among 23 players, received $500.

The MLGT has scheduled a 54-hole tournament next week, the annual Sunshine State Classic at Fountains CC South Monday through Wednesday. It will be the tour’s 119th event of the year.

There was $150 in the skins pot with 6 skins out worth $25 each.
