Bergeron birdies second extra hole to caputure 21 MLGT Victory

PLANTATION, Fla. – Brett Bergeron of LaPlace, La., outlasted two South Florida rivals Monday to earn his 21st victory on the Fuzion-Minor League Golf Tour, his first this year.

Bergeron birdied the par-4 second hole on the East course at Jacaranda Country Club,sinking a 15-foot putt from behind the hole for the win, earning $1,000 from the $7,183 purse.

Moments earlier, Nicholas Thompson of nearby Coral Springs two-putted for par, then Carlos Velez of Miami missed the green in regulation, pitched on and two-putted for bogey. The trio matched three under par 68s in regulation and tied at the first extra hole with par-4s.

Thompson, who is tuning up for the Nationwide Tour which starts later this month in Panama, scored his only MLGT victory on the same course Jan. 10 with 66. Velez earned his first pro victory last Thursday, a shared title in an MLGT event at Fountains CC, Lake Worth, which was cut short by rain and darkness. They tied for second among 61 starters here, each receiving $607.50.

In regulation Monday, Bergeron and Velez had five birdies and two bogeys apiece. Thompson holed out from the fairway for an eagle at the par-4 fifth hole and added two birdies and a bogey.

Next on the MLGT schedule: Wednesday at the Links at Madison Green, Royal Palm Beach, and Thursday on the Eagle course at President CC, West Palm Beach. A separate bonus pool has been established which will be distributed among players competing in all three tournaments this week. There were six who paid an additional $300 apiece in advance of Monday’s play.

There was $320 in the skins pot with 6 skins out worth $53.34 each.
