Matt Springer wins playoff over David Johnson on 41st hole

Johnson now leads Q-School Contest 4

PALM CITY, Fla. – Matt Springer birdied the fifth playoff hole Wednesday to outlast David Johnson and win a Fuzion-Minor League Golf Tour event at The Evergreen Club.

After they tied at seven under par 137, Springer, of Gary, Ind., and Stuart, and Johnson, of Palm Bay, halved the 11th 12th, 13th and 14th holes with pars of 5-4-3-4. Then at the par-4 15th, Springer made an eight-foot birdie putt for the win moments after Johnson missed a 15 footer.

In regulation, each shot 70-67. Springer made five birdies each day and three bogeys Tuesday. Johnson had nine birdies total and a bogey each round. Each had scored one other MLGT victory, both last year, Springer on Dec. 8 at the Links at Madison Green in Royal Palm Beach and Johnson on May 5, 2010 at nearby Hammock Creek GC.

Springer earned $1,500 from the $7,000 purse. Johnson, second among 25 starters, received $1,075.

Q-SCHOOL CONTEST FOUR

The second place finish moved Johnson into the top spot in Q-School Contest 4 with three events remaining in the contest. Springer is second, Bobby Collins third, Ben Hartman fourth, and Sal Spallone is fifth, all within $172 of each other. Lurking in 6th and 7th place is Thursday's champ (2010 Q-School contest winner) Jon McLean and 10 time MLGT winner (2010 MLGT Tour Championship winner) Greg O'Mahony.

This was the MLGTs 65th tournament this year. Three events remain before a 16-day summer break: Friday, Champions Club, Stuart; June 21-22, Ironhorse CC, West Palm Beach; and June 24, Fountains CC, Lake Worth. The eighth season will resume July 11 at The Wanderers Club in Wellington.

There was $160 in the Day 1 Skins Pot with 6 skins worth $26.67 each.
