ATLANTIS, Fla. – Wayne De Haas of Johannesburg, South Africa, won his second three-man playoff in 13 days on the Minor League Golf Tour, sinking a 12-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole Tuesday at Atlantis Country Club.
De Haas outlasted Marty Stanovich of Tamarac, FL and Matt Genchi of Hiawassee, GA, after they tied at two-under par 70. On June 11 at Hollybrook Golf & Tennis Club in Pembroke Pines, De Haas parred the third extra hole to beat out Jimmy Lytle and Corey Henry after they tied at five-under 67.
In regulation Tuesday, De Haas and Genchi each had four birdies and two bogeys. Stanovich eagled the par-5 first hole and added three birdies and as many bogeys. Stanovich missed a 15 footer before De Haas converted, then Genchi missed from six feet.
In 2004, Genchi won two Palm Beach County Golf Association tournaments, the International and Tournament of Champions. His older brother Steve won the County Amateur in 1999 at the age of 18.
It was De Haas’ fourth MLGT victory since June 2008. He received $400 from the $1,596 purse, raising his career earnings to $15,317.78.
The 59th tournament of the year drew 21 starters. Two events remain on the schedule before a summer vacation, Thursday at the Wanderers Club, Wellington, and Friday, the Summer Team Championship at Hammock Creek GC, Palm City. The MLGT resumes July 13 at Indian Spring CC-East near Boynton Beach.
