PALM CITY, Fla. – Brandon Smith of West Palm Beach, FL, birdied four holes in a row and eight of the first twelve, Thursday, enroute to winning the opening tournament of the 13th season on the Minor League Golf Tour.
Smith fired a six under par 66 at Hammock Creek Golf Club, winning by two shots. He birdied Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11 and 12, and had a double bogey at the par-4 13th hole. It was Smith’s 30th MLGT victory, including two as an amateur. He turned pro in January, 2010. Smith collected $800 from the $3,870 purse, raising his career earnings to $98,442.25.
Carl McCauley of Parkland, FL and Charlie Harrison of Atlanta, GA matched 68's, tied for second among 30 starters, each with five birdies and a bogey. Harrison birdied 4 of the last 5 holes. Joshua Eure of Jupiter, FL making his first MLGT start, eagled the par-5 second hole and tied for fourth at 69.
The MLGT has three 18-hole events next week: Monday, TPC at Eagle Trace, Coral Springs; Tuesday, Fountains CC-North, Lake Worth; and Thursday, Martin Downs CC, Palm City.
