CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Brad Gehl of Carmel, IN, made four birdies on the inward nine Tuesday at TPC Eagle Trace to win Minor League Golf Tour's first major of the season. His five under par 67 was a stroke better than three players tied at 68 among the 44 starters.
After multiple weather delays, the first round scheduled Monday was canceled because of rain and a golf course partially under water and unfit for play. Gehl, 25, received the top prize of $4,000 from the $22,440 purse, raising his career earnings to $14,852 since January of 2014. It was his third MLGT win.
Gehl made three birdies and two bogeys on the front to turn in 35, then birdied Nos. 10, 11, 15 and 17 for a mistake-free finish.
Three players tied for 2nd one shot out of a playoff at 68 including Brian Fister from Lexington, KY, Dan McCarthy from Syracuse, NY, and Max Buckley from Rye, NY.
TPC / Club Link decided to not charge us for Monday's round so each player will be refunded $50 via the way they paid for the event.
The MLGT plays again Thursday at Martin Downs in Palm City, its 10th tournament of the year.
After over 8 hours of play and the final group only through 5 holes, the opening round of Major I was washed out at 4pm on Monday. Director Scott Tuner exhausted every option trying to get the round completed, but the weather and course conditions did not cooperate.
With casual water flooding many of the fairways it was not feasible to continue to play until dark and finish the round in the morning. This was determined after discussions with the Head Professional and Superintendent about trying to recommence play at 7:10am. The greens would be not mowed and covered in dew, and the maintenance staff would not be able to prepare the course for tournament play at that time.
"It was a difficult decision, but it was the only fair option" said Turner. "It will allow for a complete tournament, under the best possible conditions given the situation." Additionally, TPC / Club Link decided to not charge us for today's round so each player will be refunded $50 via the way they paid for the event.
Below is The Minor League Golf Tour policy regarding what constitutes an official tournament and the guidelines for canceling a round.
Official Tournament: The goal of The Minor League Golf Tour is to complete scheduled events.
The tournament committee and players will make their best effort to complete each round and tournament as scheduled. If the entire field completes at least 50% of the scheduled event (9 holes of an 18 hole event, 18 holes of a 36 hole event) it will be considered an Official Tournament. The total number of holes counted will be equal to the number that the final group completes.
After exhausting all feasible options, the tournament committee may suspend or cancel a round (Rule 33-2d) in the event unplayable conditions occur.
In the event a tournament cannot be completed due to weather the purse portion of the entry fee will be refunded/distributed evenly to all the players in the field. Refunds of course costs will be decided on a case by case basis by the host club.
