WEST PALM BEACH, Fla, - Steve LeBrun of West Palm Beach, FL, parred the first extra hole Thursday for his 67th victory on the Minor League Golf Tour, his second this week and fourth this month.
LeBrun outlasted Nicole Sakamoto of Honolulu, Hawaii, after they tied at six under par 65 on the Estate course at PGA National. Each was bogey-free with six birdies. Sakamoto, the only woman in the field of 26, played the course at 6,112 yards or 92 percent of the men’s 6,644 yards. MLGT policy is ladies are allowed to compete against the men and will play no less than 90% where the men play from.
In the playoff, LeBrun reached the green in two at the par-4 first hole for an easy two-putt par from about 10 feet. Sakamoto missed the green in regulation, chipped on and missed par from 11 feet.
LeBrun received $700 from the $3,165 purse and another $214 from an optional bonus pool, raising his career earnings to $187,000 since September, 2007. Making just her seventh MLGT start, Sakamoto collected $530, her biggest check and best finish.
Sakamoto was home for an off week from the Symetra Tour. She currently sits in 34th position on the money list. At years end, the top 10 earn their LPGA Tour card.
LeBrun is in the field Monday at The Bear’s Club in Jupiter for sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open June 14-17 at Shinnecock Hills on Long Island.
The MLGT plays three days in a row next week. Tuesday on the Fazio course at PGA National, Palm Beach Gardens; Wednesday at Hammock Creek GC, and Thursday, The Evergreen Club, both in Palm City. There is an optional $150 bonus pool for those players competing in all three events. 100% of the entries go into the purse for that with the top 33% plus ties earning a check.
