JUPITER, Fla. – Justin Hicks of Wellington, FL shot the low round of the tournament Thursday enroute to winning for the 41st time on the Minor League Golf Tour. A seven under par 65 at Jupiter Country Club enabled Hicks to vault into the lead at 134 and win by one stroke.
Hicks, 43, who won twice on the Nationwide Tour a decade ago, eagled the par-5 fourth hole and birdied Nos. 5, 9, 12, 14 and 17. On Wednesday, he made six birdies but bogeyed three of the last five. He earned $2,000 from the $11,470 purse and an additional $4,500 toward his entry into qualifying school later this year.
John Gerber of Bluffton, SC, and Nicolas Cavero of Valencia, Venezuela, the first round co-leaders, tied for second among 40 starters by matching scores of 67-68—135. In 36 holes, Gerber carded 12 birdies and three bogeys, Cavero an eagle, 10 birdies and three bogeys. They received $1,350 apiece from the main purse and $50 each from Q-school contest No. 5 presented by Joey D Golf and ClubCraft.
Eric Beringer won the 2nd Day Shootout worth $232 with a score of 67.
In the opening round Wednesday of the MLGT’s 90th tournament this year, Dominick Vennari of Baltimore, MD, made a rare double eagle at the 552-yard, par-5 16th hole. Following his tee shot, Vennari holed a 2-iron from 261 yards for a deuce enroute to a 69. He added 71 for 140 to finish tied for 10th.

23 of the 40 players chose to enter the optional Qualifying School Contest presented by Joey D golf and ClubCraft. The entry fee was $200 and the low score after 36 holes will earn $4,500 towards the Q-School entry fee of their choice. Second place in the contest will earn $100 towards their Q-School entry fee.
