PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – The Champion course at PGA National proved to be a bear Monday as no one broke par on the demanding par 70 golf course.
The site of the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic each spring since 2007 as well as the Ryder Cup in 1983 and the 1987 PGA Championship, the Champion was unyielding in the wind with scores of two over par 72 leading to a playoff.
The winner was Eric Beringer of Philadelphia, who sank a 10-foot putt for par-4 on the second extra hole to beat out Stephen P Grant of Plantation, FL, who had a tap in for double bogey. They halved the first extra hole with par-4's.
Coincidentally, they were paired together in the second threesome off the tee at 10:08am. Beringer finished with birdie at the par-5 18th, Grant on a bogey.
It was Beringer’s 5th win since he joined the MLGT in February, 2008. He had four bogeys on the front nine, two birdies on the back and collected $800 from the $3,820 purse plus $183 from an optional bonus pool and $170 in skins for total of $1,153.
Grant, second among 28 starters, received $600 from the purse. His card showed two birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey at the par-4 11th hole. He joined the Stuart-based mini-tour in April, 2014, and earned his only MLGT victory this past May.
This was a tune up event for Major III held on the Champion course at PGA Natonial on Mon/Tues October 21-22.
