PLANTATION, Fla. – Curtis Thompson of Coral Springs, FL birdied the last two holes Monday to squeeze out a one-stroke victory in a Minor League Golf Tour tournament at the Plantation Preserve Golf Course.
It was the second MLGT victory for the younger brother of tour pros Nick and Lexi Thompson, both former MLGT winners, too. Curtis, 27, won on Oct. 22, 2014 at Eagle Trace GC, the long-time home course for the Thompson family.
Curtis birdied the first and fifth holes to turn in 33, then got his winning margin by being the only entrant to birdie 17 and 18. He received $800 from the $4,140 purse, $228 from an optional bonus pool and $54.30 in skins for a total of $1,082.30.
Two Palm Beach Gardens players tied for second at 68. Marc Mazza made four birdies and a bogey at the par-4 11th hole. Matt Hill had five birdies and a double bogey at the par-3 12th.
The tuneup for second stage qualifying Nov. 5-8 for the Korn Ferry Tour in 2020 drew 33 entries. Three more tournaments are scheduled this month: Tuesday at Abacoa GC, Jupiter; Thursday at Seagate CC, Delray Beach, and next Monday on the Champion course at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, the 97th event of the MLGT’s 16th season.
