MIAMI, Fla. – Brad Adamonis of Coral Springs, FL and Cumberland, RI, had the low score the final round Tuesday as the Minor League Golf Tour returned to action after a 54-day absence because of the coronavirus pandemic. Adamonis closed with a four under par 67 for 136, winning by one stroke at Melreese Country Club.
Adamonis, 46, opened Monday with 69 on three birdies and a bogey, then added four birdies in an error free second round. It was his 23rd victory since he joined the MLGT in February, 2005. He earned $2,000 from the $11,200 purse, raising his career total to $94,278.
Akshay Bhatia, a teenager from Los Aneles, CA who was making his first MLGT start, let an opening round lead slip away and tied for fourth at 140. Bhatia started with 66 on five birdies, closing with three birdies and six bogeys for a 74.
In between were Brad Gehl, Carmel, Ind., 69-68--137, on eight birdies and three bogeys; and Piri Borja of Coral Springs, FL, five birdies and two bogeys each round plus a double bogey-6 at the opening hole Tuesday.
Eric Beringer won $177 in the 2nd day shootout with a score of 71.
There were 46 players in the MLGT’s first tournament since March 24. In that final round seven and a half weeks ago, Sunny Kim of Queens, NY, closed with 59 for 130 at The Fox Club in Palm City, the first time anyone had broken 60 in MLGT history, which dates back to 2004.
This event was run with very strict temporary Covid-19 rules/restrictions to comply with the State/county restrictions, comply with the CDC and to ensure the safety of the players, tour staff and the host facility staff. A big thank you to Melreese Country Club for being a great host and to the players for adhearing to these rules as we adjust to the "new normal".
MIAMI, Fla. - Akshay Bhatia from Los Angeles, CA leads the way after day one at Melreese Country Club after a bogey free 66. After 2 birdies on the par 35 front nine, Bhatia added 3 birdies on the back nine for matching 33's and a 5-under par 66.
Eric Dietrich from Cheshire, CT didn't let the 54 day Covid-19 break slow down his momentum. He picked up where he left off with a 4-under par 67 today. Before the break he won Monday Qualifier School Contest #1 back in late February shooting 204 (64-72-68). He will try to overtake Bhatia tomorrow and win for the 2nd time in 2020.
